On Wednesday, December 18, 2019, the GoAmazing delegation was honored to visit Keio University, Mita campus.
Keio University was founded by Fukuzawa Yukichi in 1858 and his portrait is on the 10,000 Yen bill in Japan. Keio University is one of the top universities in Japan and is known for introducing many modern education systems.
While there, Vice-President Ikuo Takahashi gave us a tour of the facilities. We had a chance to view a historic library, as well as a more modern library building that went 5 floors up, and 5 floors down in the ground! There was also a rare book exhibition of Gutenburg bibles and texts, one of which is more than 500 years old.
As with many older universities, there are beautiful gardens, meaningful sculptures and grand trees surrounding both historical and modern buildings, including the first public speaking hall in Japan, where Keio University founder, Fukuzawa Yukichi originally taught.
We would like to thank Professor Takahashi and PhD Student Tetsuo Horiguchi for showing us around and making us feel welcome. We hope to be able to visit other Keio University locations in the near future and gain more knowledge about the Japanese education system.
